UTLA members approve agreements on health benefits and school stabilization(Print) UTLA members voted to approve the tentative agreements reached with LAUSD. A total of 19,529 ballots were cast. Votes were counted at UTLA headquarters and posted on the website today, December 15. The school stabilization agreement must still be voted on by the LAUSD School Board. The health benefits agreement, negotiated with the other LAUSD employee unions, secures employee health benefits at current levels for the next three calendar years (2012, 2013 and 2014). The agreement also ensures that the multi-union Health Benefits Committee will continue its role in negotiating with health care providers and overseeing plan design. The school stabilization agreement would suspend the Public School Choice program as currently designed for three years, protecting students and staff from disruptive giveaways to outside operators and limiting the reconstitution of schools. By eliminating layoffs from potential giveaways and reconstitutions, up to 690 jobs will be saved for 2012 alone. The agreement also offers local schools more autonomy and freedom from top-down LAUSD mandates, if approved by the local faculty.
