Ruben Salazar was a journalist for the Los Angeles Times. He was killed in 1970 while cover- ing the National Chicano Moratorium Against the War in Vietnam and the ensuing riot throughout the streets of East Los Angeles. In 1971, UTLA’s East Area initiated a scholarship fund in his memory. It is now sponsored by UTLA’s East Areas.
This is the 52nd year that UTLA awards scholarships to Graduating Seniors enrolled at any LAUSD High School, Continuation School, or High School Completion Program conducted in an LAUSD Community Adult School.
Complete an application form & video submission: using your phone, submit a video no longer than 5 minutes, that illustrates how Ruben Salazar’s legacy impacts your community in 2023. It can include you reading an essay or poem you wrote; a piece of art you create; or a video you film. This video needs to highlight Mr. Salazar’s work as a reporter and his death during the Chicano Moratorium, and weave that into events happening in 2023.
