In audio recordings leaked last month, Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez, Councilmember Kevin de León, Councilmember Gil Cedillo, and LA County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera were heard making hateful, racist, and colorist comments in conversation about city redistricting. Martinez and Herrera have since resigned.

UTLA members participated in a campout organized by Black Lives Matter LA outside Kevin de León’s residence in Eagle Rock pushing for his resignation from City Council. During the 18-day campout, neighbors and activists came together to share meals and build community. Retired UTLA member, Rosemary Lee, who attended several days of the campout, said she was impressed by how many people participated from all over and the camaraderie that developed. As a result, it appears that de León has moved out but, still has not resigned from his position of power as a City Councilmember.

To keep the pressure on Kevin de León to resign, Black Lives Matter LA requests notifications of his whereabouts by contacting the #OperationResignation Rapid Response Team at 562-285-6578. You can also call your City Councilmember to urge they break quorum and leave council meetings if de León is present
