The Build the Future, Fund the Fight initiative that was passed by UTLA members in February 2016 authorized an increase in UTLA monthly dues along with a dual-merger with NEA and AFT affiliates. This means that members now have dual membership in both the NEA and AFT
A portion of your UTLA dues deducted each pay period goes to our affiliates. More information about UTLA’s Dues Deductions are detailed at:
UTLA Dues are based on 1½% of the 24T9 Annual Salary from the LAUSD Schedule, split into 12 payments.
More details regarding dues can be found in the UTLA Bylaws: https://www.utla.net/about-us/constitution-bylaws
Because there is a constitutional pass-through agreement, if at any time the affiliates dues increase, these fees will be passed along to the member.
The governing bodies of our affiliates approved increases in their dues in late 2017, which means these increases will affect your monthly UTLA membership dues.
Dues are sent to UTLA from your employer based off hours worked within a pay period

Union dues are no longer tax deductible. For tax years 2018 through 2025, union dues are no longer deductible on your federal income tax return, even if itemized deductions are taken. This is a result of the tax reform bill signed into law on December 22, 2017. Consult your tax advisor to confirm.
The following remitted Union Dues might be an eligible claim on your California State income tax return. These figures are meant as a guideline and may not reflect the actual deductions that were taken (for example, if you did not work the full year or you switched job classifications, these numbers may not reflect your deductions). Always consult your tax adviser before taking any of these deductions. The below calculations represent Pay Stubs from January-December (Ex. LAUSD 1/5 Pay Date – 12/5 Pay Date)

As of July 2018, Membership Dues Authorizations are an agreement to pay monthly dues. This agreement will remain in effect unless employment ends or a member provides written notice by U.S. mail to UTLA during the open period not less than thirty (30) days and not more than sixty (60) days before the annual anniversary date of the agreement (i.e., of your signature date on your membership application). Your agreement to maintain dues payments will automatically renew from year to year unless you revoke it in writing during your open period.
If you have one or more of the following supplemental Insurances through UTLA (Colonial Life, Long Term Care, NTA, Pacific Educators, Standard) be aware your insurance(s) will be canceled along with your dues commitment. Your cancelation letter must also state you are forfeiting your insurance coverage. Some supplemental insurances are at a special group rate that require UTLA membership. You will no longer be eligible to participate in any supplemental insurances offered though UTLA Payroll.
Be aware that you will no longer be eligible to participate in UTLA meetings/votes/surveys/GLS legal services nor will you receive any UTLA Member Only communications.
If you wish to revoke your membership, upon review UTLA will honor any request to terminate union membership with written notice via U.S.

Change in Position?Your employer will formally inform UTLA when you are no longer in the bargaining unit (due to retirement, promotion, or separation) and your Membership/Premiums will automatically cease.
If you have any further questions, please contact: membership@utla.net
Your employer will inform us when you are an inactive employee in the bargaining unit. They will or will not send dues based on your leave if it is paid or unpaid.
We highly encourage you to inform your UTLA Area Representative that you are going on a leave of absence, as invaluable benefits may be jeopardizing by not maintaining UTLA membership, which includes the benefits offered by our Affiliates (CTA/NEA & CFT/AFT). Maintaining membership during a leave of absence is critical because:
UTLA recommends that active members maintain their membership while on an unpaid leave of absence.
Members opting not to continue active membership while on an unpaid leave will be transitioned in the UTLA database to an Inactive Member, meaning no deductions have been received. Once an Inactive Member is in the status for 13 months, their status will change to a Non-Member and will need to reapply to become a UTLA Member. As the individual is still part of the bargaining unit, they will remain on chapter rosters so leaders can track them and invite them to reapply.
UTLA’s practice is to allow for the continuance of membership for members whose Active status changes to Inactive for one year or less (no dues payments) and then returns to Active.
Examples:
UTLA’s practice is to allow for the reinstatement of membership (they do not need to re-enroll) if a new contract is signed within one year of the last Active membership.
If the employee separates from the district and returns, even if that return is within 12 months, they will need to re-enroll.
UTLA’s practice is to allow for the continuance of membership for under 100 day substitute members whose Active status changes to Inactive for one year or less (no dues payments) and then returns to Active.
Direct Payee Approval allows individuals to maintain UTLA membership while either employed in public education or currently not represented by the bargaining contract due to litigation.
There are several eligibility requirements that need to be met in order for an
individual to qualify.
Common examples may include:
Direct Payee Approval inquiries regarding Group Legal Services should be directed to
