JOB DESCRIPTION The Data Analytics and Visualization Specialist, as part of the Strategic Research team, will execute an ambitious program for the use of data analysis and visualization to support the campaigns and goals of United Teachers Los Angeles. The audience for our research includes our 38,000 members (educators), as well as parents, students, and community allies, public officials, policy makers, and other stakeholders. The Specialist will assist campaign teams in how to best use data analysis and visualization to elevate their stories through the following activities: Collaborate with Researchers, Communications Specialists, and Field Organizers to develop and maintain interactive and static data visualizations, which can range from web-based interactive dashboards, maps, predictive models, and reporting tools, as well as static tables and charts for print Assemble, manipulate, analyze, and interpret data from various sources Participate with the research team in proactively identifying promising sources and uses of data, including developing data-driven projects Maintain standards and best practices for storing, sharing, and securing datasets REPORTING RESPONSIBILITIES The Data Analytics and Visualization Specialist will report to the Strategic Research Director. We are currently a full-time and in-person team. STRATEGIC RESEARCH DEPARTMENT The department supports campaigns in the arenas of equitable school funding, academic freedom, social housing policy and tenant rights, climate justice and safe green schools, immigrant rights, racial justice, inequality and more. We provide research for internal strategic planning, issue advocacy/ campaigning, and the collective bargaining process. REQUIRED SKILLS SQL proficiency for managing and querying relational data Data Visualization Software/Libraries (Intermediate/ Advanced proficiency) Experience building interactive dashboards and static visualizations utilizing Tableau, PowerBI, Flourish, or other comparable software MS Office suite proficiency Must work well with a team and work with diverse groups of people PREFERABLE EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Degree or substantial coursework in one or more of the following: business/ marketing, data visualization, data analysis, statistics, social sciences, economics 3-5 years of experience with responsibility for data visualization work product Familiarity with public and private data sources Experience applying statistical techniques in a real world/outcome driven environment Web scraping experience preferred, not required Geographic Information Systems (GIS) experience preferred, not required Interest in/ familiarity with public financial data sources such as budgets, audited financial statements, or bond statements preferred, not required OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE: Commitment to social justice and winning the schools our students deserve The ability to identify which datasets are relevant and the questions to ask of them Comfortable communicating with teammates proactively Willingness to learn about the labor movement and share in an esprit de corps SALARY AND FRINGE BENEFITS UTLA staff is represented by a staff union with a negotiated agreement and just cause. Beginning salary range for this position will be $107,222-$113,247 per year depending on prior skills and experience, with regular step increases. Fringe benefits include employer paid medical, dental, vision care for staff member and eligible dependents. There is an excellent retirement plan and a monthly automobile allowance for maintenance and operation of a car. Parking is provided.
