The charter’s management has undermined the demands of educators at every turn of bargaining, coming to negotiations with low ball offers. After reaching impasse this past spring, educators participated in two mediation sessions with no progress. Their contract expired in July. Now El Camino Real teachers are turning up the pressure. “It is important that as educators we stand up as one voice and demand a fair contract from the administration,” said English teacher and Chapter Chair Carlos Monroy. “That they have allowed this to devolve rather than to solve the issue is disheartening and disappointing.” On Thursday, educators and parents picketed before school to protest the administration’s failure to address critical demands, including salaries and benefits that keep up with the rising cost of living. LAUSD school board member Scott Schmerelson joined the picket and voiced strong support for El Camino Real educators on their strike authorization vote. “As educators, we value our partnership with parents and members of the community very highly,” said Kate Rechner, Special Education English Teacher at ECRCHS. “Having the support from the community during this contract campaign has been invaluable.” El Camino Real educators are ready to strike for their demands, having already authorized a strike with a 93% YES vote.
