Because of Carvalho’s school-site budget cuts, schools across LAUSD are losing: Campus Aides Class Size Reduction Teachers Teacher Assistants Special Ed Teachers PSA Counselors PSWs School Psychologists Library Aides Tech Support Staff Dual Language Teachers Art Teachers Music Teachers Custodians School Supervision Aides Parent and Community Reps School Nurses …and other positions that support students, campus safety, and educational instruction LAUSD is projected to have $6.3 billion in reserves by July — using only a fraction of that money would restore school budgets and stop the damage to schools and programs. By trying to centralize district funding and withhold money from our schools, Carvalho is going for a power grab. And students will pay the price. New Open World Academy K-12 school counselor John Aquino says the budget cuts will eliminate two school counselors, two career and college coaches, and are threatening the loss of dual enrollment programs at his school. “We are the ones that help students graduate from high school and go on to college,” says Aquino. “We’re not just losing positions — we’re losing key community members who have established relationships with our students.” Capistrano Elementary Special Education teacher Tamara Wall says they are losing their full-time School Psychologist to two days a week. “When we have a student who’s in crisis, it’s our School Psychologist who is there to support the student and the administrators and the teacher,” Wall says. “And even our teachers, when we’re having a rough day or, in my case, when my Special Education students are displaying unexpected school behaviors, I see the School Psychologist to debrief. It’s definitely going to hurt all around not to have that support every day.” Sign Up for the May 7 Rally Rally at the School Board: Stop the Carvalho CutsMay 7 at 4:30 PM LAUSD Headquarters Transportation Info Recent News See All Posts Pearl Students Rise Up to Save Music & Spanish Teachers 27.09.24 Ten Community Schools to Pilot Alternative Assessments 20.09.24 Community School Coordinator Appreciation Week 2024 20.09.24
