On September 16, thousands of educators, principals, food service workers, custodians, teaching assistants, administrators, school site construction workers, and other education staff picketed together at more than 700 school sites across LAUSD. We made our demands public for the district to invest in the employees who teach and provide services for the hundreds of thousands of LAUSD students, and who work to keep our schools running.

LAUSD’s reserve now sits at over $5 billion — the largest reserve of any school district in the country. Yet the district is proposing to pass the costs of healthcare onto employees and refuses to bring any serious solutions to the bargaining table, failing to meet the urgency we feel every day.

Our morning pickets sent a clear message to the district: we are united, and we will not accept any more delays, excuses, or shortchanging when it comes to our schools, students, and communities.

The September 16 pickets set us up strong for the next three bargaining sessions, scheduled for October 7, 21, and 27.

Until they come to the table with serious movement on our demands, we will keep showing up bigger and stronger to make the district feel the urgency we feel.  On November 6, we will rally at five locations across LAUSD to remind the district of the power of workers in the streets.
