About the Academy

Summer Educator Academy (SEA) 2026 is a national-level professional learning and Trainer-of-Trainers institute held in Leesburg, Virginia. This immersive experience is designed to develop skilled educators into trainers who can return to their locals and lead impactful professional learning, build member capacity, and strengthen union-driven education.

Participants will engage in:

  • High-level facilitation training
  • Collaborative learning with educators from across the country
  • Development of training modules to bring back and implement locally

This application is designed to identify three dynamic educators to serve as the first cohort representing the local at SEA 2026.

UTLA is seeking educators who are not only strong in their craft, but who are prepared to lead, train, and multiply impact by returning and contributing to the local’s professional learning infrastructure.

Application is due March 20, 2026.

Required Criteria

Applicants must meet all of the criteria below in order to be considered:

  • Current classroom teacher
  • National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT)
  • Demonstrated training and/or facilitation experience
  • Submit a recommendation from a union leader:
    • Chapter Chair, Area Officer, or Citywide Officer
  • If initially selected, willingness to develop and deliver a short presentation for review
  • Availability to attend the Trainer of Trainers Institute:
    • July 8–15, 2026
    • Leesburg, Virginia
  • Commitment to participate in post-institute responsibilities, including:
    • Supporting salary point class development
    • Facilitating and delivering SEA-aligned training modules locally

We are excited to launch the application process for the first cohort of educators to attend the Summer Educator Academy (SEA) 2026. This opportunity is designed for educators who are ready to lead beyond their classroom—developing their skills as trainers, facilitators, and union educators. We are looking for dynamic, committed, and experienced educators who are prepared not only to learn, but to return and actively contribute to building the capacity of our local through training, collaboration, and leadership. Please review the criteria carefully and respond thoughtfully. This is a selective process, and we are excited to identify a strong inaugural cohort.
