This week, students in LA joined others across the country in school walk outs to show the Trump administration that their generation will stand up to defend their families, communities, and each other. On Wednesday, an estimated 4,500 LAUSD students from over 20 schools across the district walked out, gathered at City Hall, then marched to the Metropolitan Detention Center to protest inhumane immigration policies. Several campuses have gone into lockdown due to nearby immigration operations, and some schools have even been targeted directly by immigration enforcement. Schools are hubs of support for our students and families — and for some, the only place where they feel safe. As educators, we play a critical role in teaching and defending students’ rights, and nurturing their leadership. Every student deserves a safe, inclusive, and welcoming place to learn and organize. We are here to support and guide our students by connecting what we teach to current events and equipping them with best practices to safely exercise their right to protest.
