The 140-member UTLA Bargaining Team met with LAUSD Monday night, April 28, over Zoom for the sixth bargaining session on the Win Our Future platform.

We called out LAUSD’s Special Education Inclusion proposal in which LAUSD continues to just expect schools to make inclusion happen with virtually no support, planning, or additional resources. On top of that LAUSD even denied doing what we know they are doing — closing necessary special day classes.

We gave counterproposals to protect against unfair attendance criticism in evaluations (Article X) and demand clarity and support during emergency-related school closures.

LAUSD made mostly minor changes to their proposals. Their proposal on Master Plan for English Learners comes up far short of supporting this growing population of students and educators, and their proposal on Adult Ed did nothing to address the unique nature of their job hours.

After six sessions and two months, LAUSD still has not responded to 34 of our proposals. They still have not said a word about:

• Our solution to the broken wage scale and other salary increases

• Class Size Reduction

• Staffing improvements for counselors, PSWs, PSAs, and other critical positions

• Fixing the class size and staffing enforcement process with daily accountability for LAUSD

• School stability and protections against subcontracting, school closure and program cuts

• Immigrant student support

• Support for LGBTQIA + students and staffing

• Housing, BSAP, Healthy Green Schools and other critical issues facing LAUSD students

While public education is under attack by the federal government and the district sits on a $6.4 billion reserve, LAUSD is failing to even respond to these proposals.

We are facing a school district moving with an unacceptable lack of urgency in bargaining and a federal government trying to starve out public schools.

On May 17, we’re taking the fight — alongside dozens of other LA-area educator unions — to Elon Musk’s SpaceX in Hawthorne on Saturday, May 17, at 11 AM. This is a demonstration of power to Trump, Musk, and LAUSD. It is a warning of the fight we will wage for our students, whether against the district or the administration.
