UTLA and SEIU Local 99 Joint Rally at the School Board: Stop the Carvalho Cuts
333 S. Beaudry in DTLA
UTLA and SEIU Local 99—the two largest unions in LAUSD—are rallying together on May 7 to demand that LAUSD and Carvalho use the $6.3 billion in projected reserves to protect students from staffing and program cuts next school year.
This is what LA students face next school year if the school-site budget cuts are not reversed:
- Less time to meet with PSWs, PSAs, school psychologists, and counselors.
- Less help in the classroom, especially for students with special needs.
- Fewer programs in arts, dance, music, and electives that make learning engaging and fun.
- Less staff to keep campuses clean and safe.
- Reduced support for the Black Student Achievement Plan, English Language Learners programs, and Community Schools.
- Higher class sizes and increased grade-level combo classes.
In Carvalho’s attempt to centralize power and take decision-making away from school sites, he is amassing an unprecedented level of reserves.
Together, SEIU Local 99 and UTLA members demand that LAUSD use the reserves and restore school-site budgets.
