Despite the significant financial support from wealthy donors for candidates advocating for the privatization of education and expansion of charters, voters overwhelmingly rejected this approach. Once again, the grassroots efforts of UTLA members proved that our collective strength can overcome the influence of corporate special interests. We congratulate Sherlett Hendy Newbill elected in District 1, Scott Schmerelson, the re-elected incumbent in District 3, and Karla Griego, special education teacher elected in District 5, on winning their races for LAUSD school board. These candidates have prioritized critical issues such as adequate staffing, reduced class sizes, environmentally sustainable schools, and mental health resources for students. Their leadership promises to drive continued progress within our district, especially amid increasing challenges from those opposed to public education. [From President Cecily Myart-Cruz] “UTLA remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that quality public education is accessible to all. In the lead-up to this election, hundreds of volunteers knocked on thousands of doors, engaging voters on issues most important to parents, students, and educators alike. Now more than ever, with strong support from working communities, Los Angeles educators are ready to stand up against any agenda that threatens public education. We won’t let our school boards be bought — we’re here to defend our schools, students, and communities against anyone who puts profit over the public good.” Recent News See All Posts Northridge Community Middle School Demands Action 22.11.24 Position Open for UTLA Data Analytics and Visualization Specialist 18.11.24 Passings: Rick Regberg 31.10.24
